ISLAMIC BANKING: SYSTEM & OPERATION

INTRODUCTION

Realizing the Islamic Finance has a major potential to be developed and enhanced. CERT with CIBFM is proud to present this 2 days workshop on IBSO especially designed to enhance the knowledge of Islamic Banking principles, highlight current issues as well as updated the development of products and practices in global market particularly on the system and operation itself. CERT will bring to the participants a distinguished panel of speakers who are widely recognized in their respective areas. They will provide delegates an opportunity to discuss and explore the issues related to Islamic Finance.

OBJECTIVE

Acquire the knowledge of Shariah principles in Islamic Finance and Investment operations;

  • Discover the legal and regulatory issues in Islamic Finance services;
  • Understanding the principles, models and structure of Islamic Finance and Investment;
  • Acquire the knowledge of technical and accounting treatment in Islamic Finance industry;
  • Review what are the issues and challenges of strategic marketing of Islamic Finance and Investment products and services

The Expert

Prof. Dr. Engku Rabiah Adawiah is currently a Professor at IIUM Institute of Islamic Banking and Finance (IIiBF), International Islamic University Malaysia (1990). She obtained her LLB (1st class honours) and LLB (Shari’ah) (1st class honours) from IIUM. She successfully completed her Masters of Comparative Laws from the same university. She was conferred with PhD in law from the University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom (1998). Currently, she is a member of the Shariah Advisory Council of Central Bank of Malaysia, Securities Commission Malaysia and Labuan Financial Services Authority (Labuan FSA). In addition, she is also a member of the Board of Directors in the Malaysian Institute of Islamic Understanding and a member if the disciplinary committee for the Malaysian Bar Council. She is also a member of the Shari’ah Board to Khazanah in relation to two of its exchangeable sukuk that had been issued by Rafflesia Capital Ltd and Cherating Capital Ltd.

Dr. Aznan Hasan is currently a lecturer at the Islamic Law Department, Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws, Interna-tional Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). He received his first degree in Shariah from University of Al Azhar, Egypt. He then successfully completed his Master Degree in Shariah from Cairo University with distinction and the board of examination has recommended that his thesis be published. He then obtained his PhD in Islamic Law from the University of Wales Lampeter in United Kingdom. Currently he is a Shariah Advisor to Bursa Malaysia, RHB Islamic, ACR Retakaful and an independent Shariah advisor for Islamic securities insurance, approved by and registered with the Malaysian Securities Commission. He taught several subjects such as Islamic Legal Theory and Islamic Law of Transactions.

Megat Hizaini Hassan is a partner at Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill. An alumnus of the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM), he also holds Master of Laws (LLM) degrees from the University of Cambridge, UK, and Harvard Law School, US. He was a Cambridge Commonwealth Trust scholar at Cambridge, International Islamic University scholar at Harvard and a Royal Dutch/Shell scholar at IIUM. He was called to the Malaysian Bar in 1991.Megat is well versed in matters relating to Islamic banking and finance, as well as corporate legal and regulatory developments. He has advised local and international clients on issues pertaining to the legal and regulatory framework, as well as matters relating to applicable Shariah standards, for Islamic financial or investment transactions in Malaysia and abroad. These include structuring and documentation of Islamic financing facilities and investment structures. He has also been recognised as one of the leading lawyers in his area of practice, through publications such as International Financial Law Review’s Guide to the World’s Leading Islamic Finance Lawyers and Expert Guides, Chambers Asia as well as Islamic Finance News’ Leading Lawyers Directory. Prior to joining Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill, Megat was with another major law firm in Malaysia, where he headed the firm’s Islamic banking and finance practice and also served as director of a Shariah compliance advisory firm registered with the Securities Commission Malaysia. He was also a lecturer at the Kulliyyah of Laws, International Islamic University, Malaysia. A co-author of The Law and Practice of Islamic Banking and Finance (second edition published in 2010 by Sweet & Maxwell), Megat has also written on the subject for several publications. He has served as a lecturer at the Ahmad Ibrahim Kulliyyah of Laws, IIUM, and continued to teach at the same university on a guest lecturer/part-time basis. In addition, he has presented at various seminars and conferences on legal and regulatory issues concerning Islamic finance.
