Brunei Institute of Leadership & Islamic Finance (BILIF) in collaboration with Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and World Bank Group with the support of Brunei Darussalam Central Bank (BDCB) organised the Brunei Islamic Finance (B.I.F.) Summit 2023 from 12 – 14 June 2023 at the International Convention Centre, Bandar Seri Begawan, in support of Brunei Mid-Year Conference and Exhibition 2023 (Brunei M.Y.C.E 2023).
The second day of the summit featured presentations and panel discussions on the topics, “Fintech and Islamic finance: A path to differentiation”; “Web3.0, DeFi and Yield Generation within DeFi”; “Islamic Fintech and Resilient & Sustainable Future: Bringing Them All Together”; “Opportunities in the Digital Finance Space”; and “Future for Islamic Neobanks”. The speakers and panels during these sessions were Yang Mulia Dr Mohd Hairul Azrin Bin Haji Besar, UBD School of Business and Economics; Awang Adi Shamsul bin Haji Sabli, Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam; Yang Mulia Denny Muslim, Beep Digital Solutions; Dr Ahmed Tahiri Jouti, Green for South Inc, Canada; Dean Gillespie, Islamic Bank Australia; Zuhursho Rahmatulloev, Alif Capital Holdings, Tajikistan; Syakir Hashim, ZaynFi, Singapore; Harza Sandityo, Hijra Bank, Indonesia; Mohammad Ridzuan Abdul Aziz, CS Tech, Malaysia; Shamsuddin Salleh, Lyndung, Malaysia and Rafiza Ghazali, KAF Investment Bank, Malaysia.
During the last day on 14 June 2023, the summit continued with presentations entitled “Awqaf Free Zones” by Yahya Aleem ur Rehman, IsDB and “BILIF-UBD Research: Impact of Financial Industry Regulations on the Economy of Brunei Darussalam” by Yang Mulia Awang Mohammad Ashri bin Sharbini, BILIF. Sharing sessions on respective Islamic Finance Projects were also held, presented by Mohd Radzuan Ahmad Tajuddin, World Bank Group, Dr Nana Riana, Ministry of Finance, Indonesia; and Harza Sandityo.
The summit concluded with a closing remark delivered by Yang Mulia Dayang Hajah Sufinah binti Haji Sahat, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BILIF. During her speech, she expressed her appreciation to the partners, guests and participants who have supported the summit and hoped that it would inspire the participants to innovate and create new strategies in Islamic finance that would be beneficial to their respective organisations and the national sustainability agenda.
In the afternoon, BILIF organised an excursion to the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque and Brunei River Cruise as part of BILIF’s appreciation to the speakers and sponsors of the event as well as an opportunity to showcase the beauty and nature of Brunei Darussalam to BILIF’s international guests.
Brunei M.Y.C.E 2023 is organised by the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism through the Tourism Development Department in collaboration with local and international government agencies, statutory bodies, higher educational institutions, stakeholders and private agencies. The Brunei M.Y.C.E 2023 is also fully supported by several official media partners, namely Radio Television Brunei (RTB), the Information Department (Pelita Brunei) and Brunei Press Sdn Bhd.
